No. 2007-05

13 September 2007

1. COMPETITION TEAM PRACTICE:  A reminder that competition team practice for the 2007-2008 season is held on Saturdays at 1:00 pm.  If you are interested in fencing in USFA, AFL, or dual meet competitions this coming season and intend to win bouts, you need to practice with the team.

2. 5 MINUTE LESSONS:  Each week at open fencing (and anytime we can schedule after a class or when the Salle is open) we offer 5 minute lessons.  Five minutes, what can I do in 5 minutes?  The answer is simple - it only takes 3 minutes maximum to fight a bout, 4 minutes if you are tied at 3 minutes, even fewer minutes if you lose 0-5.  The 5 minute lesson is an intensive workout with a goal of at least 100 repetitions of a skill or tactical choice, done with the full range of footwork.  Each week offers a different lesson based on new developments, what we see in bouts in the salle, and progression in the skills program.

3. SKILLS:  Terri Noll is now our senior amateur fencer in our 5 level Skills Program with a Level 3.  Linda Barrett is our senior classical fencer in our 9 rank Classical Skills Program with a Rank 5.  These programs require work, so take time to review the requirements, learn the knowledge material, and test.

4. COMPETITION SCHEDULE:  The United States Fencing Association schedule for September and October is:

22-23 September - Ronin Open - Manassas

29 September - Virginia Novice - Richmond

13-14 October - The Battle of Manassas - Manassas

20-21 October - Regional Youth Circuit - Springfield

27-28 October - Virginia Tech Open - Blacksburg

The fall schedule for the American Fencing League has not yet been published, but preliminary schedule is for meets on the weekends of 30 September, 7 October, and 28 October.

5. TEAMS:  You need to select your Captains and start working on the internal Salle Team League schedule.
