Salle Policies - Safety Rules

(Section I-B.1. Athletes' Handbook)

The following rules supplement the rules of fencing and the customs of the Salle to provide a safe environment for students and coaches:

(1)  Fencers will not point a weapon at any other fencer unless both fencers are wearing a mask and appropriate uniform.

(2)  Fencers will carry their weapons point down at all times in the Salle.  The only exception is that fencers may carry their weapons point up when on an electric piste, plugged in, and waiting for a referee to perform tests.

(3)  Fencers will maintain their uniforms in good repair and clean at all times.  Gloves that are worn must be replaced. Weapons will be sanded regularly to prevent corrosion, nicks, and steel splinters.  Fencers will visually inspect their masks before use and immediately correct dents and displaced mesh.

(4)  Before fencing fencers will check the buttons of their weapons to ensure the button is in place and in good condition.

(5)  Fencers will wear an underarm plastron in any internal Salle competition.

(6)  Female fencers must wear plastic chest protectors; male fencers are encouraged to do so.

(7)  Individuals giving instruction will wear an appropriate coach’s jacket or additional padded chest protection and sleeve.  When giving epee lessons that involve foot or leg hits, a leg and foot protector will be worn.

(8)  Fencers will fence according to the rules using good fencing technique.  Heavy hits are prohibited, as are attempts to physically intimidate opponents or deliberate collisions.

(9)  Fencers will bring any injury, howsoever small, to the attention of a coach.  This includes injuries sustained outside of fencing.

(10)  Any fencer who observes an unsafe situation should immediately loudly call Halt.  Every fencer in the Salle hearing such a call will stop fencing until the unsafe condition can be corrected.

(11)  In the event of serious injury or other emergency all fencers in the Salle will follow the direction of the senior coach present in responding to the emergency.

(12)  Every fencer is responsible for the safety of their opponent and for the safety of others in the Salle.  Fencers will not cross pistes behind other fencers.  Fencers will not run their opponent backward so that they run off the rear of the piste.

(13)  Hazing, horseplay, running, or other unsafe behaviors are prohibited.
