Fencing for Athletes with Disabilities

Salle Green actively supports access to sport for individuals with disabilities.  Fencing has a long history as a sport for those with limitations to mobility or to vision.  In the aftermath of World War I, fencing was used as a rehabilitative sport for soldiers blinded by wartime wounds.  Our modern orthopaedic grips for the weapons used in foil and epee evolved immediately after World War I as some of the first adaptive sports equipment for individuals who had suffered hand or arm wounds and lost full use of their fingers.  Fencing emerged as a wheelchair sport at the first Stoke-Mandeville international sports competition in 1955.  Over the years a number of programs for fencing for the blind have operated in individual clubs in the United States, Italy, and Uruguay.  And today United States wheelchair fencers achieve strongly competitive results in World Cups and World Championships.

WHEELCHAIR FENCING

We offer wheelchair fencing for individuals who rely on the chair for mobility (International Wheelchair Fencing Committee Category A, Class 4 and Minimum) at our facility.  Our fencing floor is accessible.  However, because of other facility limitations, we offer wheelchair instruction for individuals in all Categories (A, B, and C, Classes 1A through 4) who use the wheelchair for mobility at a location of the individual's choosing.

FENCING FOR THOSE WITH VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS

We offer fencing for those with visual impairments (United States Association of Blind Athletes Classes B1 through B4) at our facility or at a location of the individual's choosing.

COMPETITION

National and international level competition is open to wheelchair fencers with championships at each level.  Within the Salle competition is open to all Salle members with modifications to the field of play of fencers who have full mobility and vision.
