Salle Competition Rules

(Section II. Athletes' Handbook)

1.  Salle Team Championships (revised 3 June 2007, 7 September 2011)

1.01.  Teams: The Salle Team Championships is contested each year by four teams, named after the colors found in the Salle coat of arms: Green, Silver, Black, and Gold.  Teams consist of three fencers, one fencing in each of the three weapons: Foil, Epee, and Sabre.  Fencers will declare their weapon at the start of the Championships, and fence in only that weapon.

1.01.a.  Teams may have as many alternates as desired, provided that each alternate also declares a weapon.

1.02.  Captain: Teams will choose a Team Captain for the Championships.  Captains may be fencing or non-fencing captains.  Captains will be identified by an appropriate armband worn during each match.  Duties of Captains include:

1.02.a.  Entering the team online using Free Online League.  To join the league go to http://www.freeonlineleague.com/myleague/sallegreenfoil and follow the standard procedure for online ladder competition.

1.02.b.  Scheduling matches with the opposing teams.

1.02.c.  Determining the team roster for each match.

1.02.d.  Ensuring that team members are present to fence in scheduled matches.

1.03.  Form of Competition

1.03.a.  Form: The Championships will be fenced as a league, with each team fencing every other team in individually arranged matches. 

1.03.b.  When Matches May Be Fenced: Matches may be fenced during weekend open fencing, after or before class sessions, or at any other mutually agreeable time within the fencing year. 

1.03.c.  Determination Of Winner: The winner of the Championships shall be decided by (1) number of victories, (2) if the number of victories be equal, by the number of matches fenced, and (3) if the number of matches fenced be equal, by overall indicators.

1.04.  Matches

1.04.a.  Form:  Matches will be fenced as a relay with each fencer fencing the member of the opposing team in his or her weapon, for a total of 3 bouts, one in each weapon.  Bouts will end and weapons will change when the score of the team leading reaches 5 and then 10.  The team that first scores 15 touches wins.  

1.04.b.  Order Of Weapons: The order in which the weapons will be fenced will be determined by draw at the start of the match.

1.04.c.  Fencing With Less Than A Full Team:  If at the scheduled time for the start of a match, one team is not complete, the match will be fenced with those fencers present.  Those bouts that cannot be fenced due to absence will be recorded with a score of 5-0 for the team with a fencer present and ready to fence in the weapon when the bout is called.

1.05.  Competition Period:  The Team Championships will be contested over the entire fencing season.

5.  Salle Annual Point Championships

5.01.  Form of Competition: The Salle Annual Point Championships is awarded to the fencer with the best sustained performance in designated competitions during the fencing year from 1 August through 31 July.  Sustained performance is defined based on participation and placing in competitions, and may represent competition in more than one weapon.

5.02.  Qualifying Events: The following events are used in determining the Annual Point Championships:

5.03.  Determination of Champion: Each fencer participating in a qualifying competitions receives one point for participating and one point for each place above last for that event.  The fencer earning the highest total of points in the fencing year is the Salle Annual Point Champion.
